The Most Rev. Steven R. Biegler, Bishop of the Diocese of Cheyenne, is a native of Timber Lake, S.D. He attended the School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City (1977-1978) before earning a BA in Philosophy from St. Mary’s College while a seminarian at Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Winona, Minnesota (1986-1989). He also earned a Bachelor of Sacred Theology (S.T.B.) from the Pontifical Gregorian University while a seminarian at the North American College in Rome (1989-1993). Later he completed a Licentiate of Sacred Theology (S.T. L.) from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome (2006-2007).
On December 19, 1992, he was ordained a deacon at St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City State. He was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Rapid City on July 9, 1993, and he was ordained and installed as the Bishop of Cheyenne on June 5, 2017.
His past assignments include: parochial vicar of the Cathedral in Rapid City (1993-1994); administrator of the Parishes in Bonesteel, Fairfax, and Ponca Creek (1994-1996); co-pastor of the Parishes in McLaughlin, McIntosh, Wakpala, Bullhead, Kenel, and Watauga (1996-2003), Director of Pastoral Formation and Apostolic Works at the North American College in Rome (2003-2006); chaplain of the Rapid City Catholic Schools and the S.D. School of Mines Newman Club (2007-2010); pastor of Our Lady of the Black Hills in Piedmont (2011-2016), pastor of Cathedral in Rapid City (2016-2017).
While a priest in the Diocese of Rapid City, he served as the Vicar General (2013-2017) and as the Diocesan Administrator of Diocese of Rapid City (2010-2011). Additionally, he served on other committees or councils including the Diocesan Finance Council, Western South Dakota Catholic Foundation Board, Terra Sancta Guild Advisory Committee, Stewardship Advisory Council, RCCSS School Board & Development Committee, Committee for Continuing Clergy Formation, Spiritual Life Committee, College of Consultors, and the Presbyteral Council. Currently, he serves on the USCCB Subcommittee on the Translation of Scripture Texts.
